Experts warn on shortage of skilled labourers in Dubai

31 October 2008

Industry experts have warned that Dubai's £100bn projects, either in the pipeline or under development, could be affected due to the severe shortage of skilled labour.

There are around 3,400 projects for completion in the Middle East region valued at more than USD 2.4 trillion, which could be delayed by the labour problem, according to a report in the Gulf News.

”Too many projects were released on to the market too quickly and now many contractors have a backlog,” one expert stated. He referred to Arabtec which has a backlog of £6.2bn worth of projects and a workforce of 52,000.

To add to the problem, there is also a shortage of civil engineers right at the time the region needs them the most.
