The Abu Dhabi international airport has opened its second runway as part of its expansion which will include a third terminal and a 100 metre high control tower to deal with growing passenger traffic, estimated at 20 million visitors per year by 2015.
The National daily paper reported that the new runway is for daytime takeoffs and landings, including the A380 Airbus, while night flights will not begin until the first quarter of 2009.
Once finished the Cat III B-classified runway will be the most technologically advanced in the region and will be able to operate even in extremely bad visibility conditions.
