Flowers and plants on roofs to fight smog

06 November 2008

Flowers and plants on the roofs of public buildings in Dubai is the initiative that the municipality of the emirate will officially launch halfway through December to contribute to minimising the environmental impact of the city on global temperatures.

This was announced by the Emirates Business newspaper, underlining that the different types of plants have already been chosen, and water from air conditioners will be used for their irrigation.

The project will be started immediately by the end of 2008, and will consist of three phases and after 2012, will include the expansion of "green roofs" to non government buildings. The initiative, say its advocates, will help maintain building temperatures lower while it will raise air quality, and reduce pollution.
