478-carat diamond on show in Dubai for first tome

04 November 2008

An uncut white diamond of 478 carats, the third-largest to be found this century, is to go on show for the first time in Dubai on November 8. Extracted from the Letseng mine in Lesotho in September, the diamond is one of the purest ever discovered.

It is to be exhibited at the Atlantis Hotel in Palm Jumeirah to mark the first Middle East China Diamond and Jewellery Summit (Mecdjs), which takes place on November 8-9. According to Emirate press agency, Wam, the diamond's name will be announced on its public debut.

It is of type II D, the highest colour quality recognised for a white diamond. Because of its high level of purity in its raw state it has the potential of becoming one of the largest flawless cut diamonds in the world.
